Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise in her early years. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a strong social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She then attended in the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the rubbish of one jurors. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was brought on straight from college to be the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
